After spending the past 20 + years in the fashion industry designing prints and patterns for retailers around the world, the most important aspect of design is to make something with a purpose or intent. My work experience ranges from working with small start-ups (including my own endeavors) to large corporate mass market stores. It’s really important to be able to create for others. The design and retail industry is competitive and feedback can be very direct. Passion, hard work and diligence is the recipe to longevity - and excitement, especially in an industry that can be short lived. It’s key to design prints and patterns with the end consumer or with functionality. When the intent to design only is to keep up with a trend or replicate another idea is where the creativity stops and survival starts. I see art and design is a means to inspire and decorate, no matter how big or small a project may be.
